The National Technical Museum invites scientists, students, and enthusiasts in archaeology, the history of medicine, anthropology, and related fields to submit papers for the second edition of the international conference Researching the Past, Advancing the Future of Medicine II.
The conference will take place at the National Technical Museum, Kostelní 42, 170 78 Prague 7, on April 9–10, 2025. The official language of the conference is English.
Over the course of two days, attendees will have the opportunity to hear from leading experts in archaeology and the history of medicine. Natascha Bagherpour Kashani and Lena Öhrström will present their research on the mummies of the Chehrābād salt mine as part of the Saltmen of Iran project. Richard Swinney will discuss two topics: the practical application of medieval techniques for hip dislocation repositioning in the 21st century and modern anticoagulants as evidence of the effectiveness of medieval medical treatments. Silvia González Soutelo will explore thermalism in antiquity, shedding light on the past, present, and future of archaeological research on Roman baths. Nick Summerton, a researcher and author of popular science books, will examine the challenges of studying ancient medicine.
The program will also include roundtable discussions in memory of Professor Robert Arnott, featuring the introduction of the Arnott Programme research group. Additionally, an interactive workshop will allow participants to freely explore various stations, examine historical objects, and engage in knowledge exchange.
Admission and Participation:
The entrance fee for audience members is 150 CZK. Speakers, students, academic staff, employees of research and collection institutions, seniors over 65, and holders of disability ID cards (ZTP) are exempt from the fee.
